What are lab refrigerators?
Laboratory refrigerators (or lab fridges) are refrigerators designed with special features and options optimised for use in the laboratory, as opposed to simpler models intended for purely domestic, catering or other use. Together with laboratory freezers, laboratory refrigerators are essential items of equipment in most laboratories.
The primary function of a laboratory refrigerator is to maintain a defined, internal storage temperature (selectable from anything between 1° to 15°C) for the secure storage and protection of temperature-sensitive products, samples, specimens, chemicals, drugs, solutions and other substances.
Laboratory refrigerators are manufactured in a range of capacities and dimensions, and are usually supplied complete with one or more shelves, compartments and/or drawers, which may often be height-adjustable or reconfigurable to suit the needs of the user. Benchtop, under-counter or upright floor-standing models are also available, depending on overall storage requirements and installation space, plus a range of refrigerator and freezer accessories.
General purpose ‘no-frill’ lab refrigerators without precise temperature control are always popular, but most models include several of the following more advanced features:
- Integrated electronic control systems for very precise, energy-efficient temperature regulation
- Digital displays and touchscreen temperature control panels
- Optical or acoustic alarm systems for over or under-temperature
- Environmentally-friendly refrigerants and insulation
